Bishops Gather for G26 in Abuja

A request for prayer from Bishop Dan as he gathers with hundreds of bishops in Abuja, Nigeria.

Greetings from Abuja, Nigeria, where Bishop Stephen Leung, his wife Nona, and I are gathering with nearly 500 bishops and their spouses from around the world for the GAFCON G26 conference from March 3–6. I deeply value your prayers for this gathering, as it is a crucial time in which we will consider significant changes to the structure of the Anglican Communion.

Founded on God’s Gospel

For the sake of the Church’s mission, it is clear from Scripture and from the teaching of the Church throughout the generations that our unity must be founded on God’s gospel for the world. It can no longer be based on the so-called Instruments of Communion—the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Anglican Consultative Council, the Lambeth Conference, and the Primates’ Council—because, rather than strengthening unity, these instruments have been used to draw the Communion away from the gospel of Jesus Christ and the historic doctrines of the Anglican Church.

Now Is The Time

GAFCON was established in 2008 to address this failure and to call the Communion back to the gospel of Jesus Christ as clearly revealed in the Bible. Now is the time for faithful Anglicans to form a well-ordered, gospel-centred, and authentically Anglican structure that reflects humble submission to the authority of Scripture in matters of faith, doctrine, Christian life, and mission. This is a critical and challenging task, and it is essential that we commit this endeavour to God in prayer.

Pray With Me

Please pray for:

  • Humility in our relationships with one another and before God throughout G26. May God protect this gathering of leaders—many of whom carry significant responsibility—from pride and grant us the crucial gift of humility (Philippians 2:3–10).

  • God’s wisdom (James 1:5) as we undertake the demanding work of discerning and shaping a structure that will best serve our true unity in Christ and His mission within the Anglican Communion. Pray also for each of the speakers who will teach at this gathering, including Archbishop Emmanuel Egbunu, who taught our clergy last year.

  • Gospel-centred unity among leaders from diverse cultures and perspectives. As we meet this week, may we experience the unity for which Jesus prayed for His Church (John 17:20).

  • Protection from distraction and spiritual attack. May God keep us watchful and steadfast against the schemes of the evil one, who prowls around seeking to devour (1 Peter 5:6–9).

  • Health and safety for all who have travelled long distances and who may be weary from jet lag. There is some instability in Nigeria, and we pray especially for safety as we meet in Abuja.

I am deeply grateful for your prayers for us at G26 this week.

Yours faithfully,

+Dan

The Right Reverend Dan Gifford
Diocesan Bishop
